How To: Cleaning Your Handmade Rug

Cleaning a handmade rug requires some care to ensure that the rug is not damaged
in the process.

Here are some steps to follow for cleaning a handmade rug:

1. Vacuum the rug thoroughly to remove any loose dirt and dust. Be sure to
vacuum both sides of the rug.

2. Test the rug for colorfastness. Dampen a small, inconspicuous area of the rug
with water and blot it with a white cloth. If the color bleeds, do not proceed
with cleaning the rug. If the color does not bleed, you can proceed with
cleaning.

3. Mix a small amount of mild detergent with water to create a solution. Avoid
using harsh chemicals or bleach, as they can damage the rug.

4. Using a sponge or soft-bristled brush, apply the detergent solution to the rug,
working in small sections. Be sure to work the solution into the fibers of the
rug, but avoid scrubbing too hard, which can damage the rug.

5. Rinse the rug thoroughly with water to remove the detergent solution. Be sure
to remove all soap residue from the rug.

6. Gently squeeze out any excess water from the rug, and then lay it flat to dry.
Do not hang the rug to dry, as this can cause the fibers to stretch and distort.

7. Once the rug is dry, vacuum it again to restore its texture and remove any
remaining dust.

It is important to note that some handmade rugs may require professional cleaning, especially if they are particularly delicate or valuable. If you are unsure about how to
clean your handmade rug, it is best to consult a professional.
